Jamie Morris : Jumping Out Of Perfectly Good Airplanes : Leo is Flying!
Leo is Flying!
Jumping Out Of Perfectly Good Airplanes

I finished out August by doing some tango dancing at Dance Downtown, a Belgian Beer Festival with some CouchSurfers, a big end of summer CS party, and then... skydiving!!!

Leo, Tamar, Konomi, and I joined my pal Elaine and her group for a trip to Skydive Santa Barbara. At Skydive SB, you can choose a 10,500ft, 13,000ft, or 18,000ft tandem jump. Over 90% of people choose the 13,000ft jump, but I decided that since it was my first (and possibly only) time, I'd go all out with 18,000ft which also happens to be the highest tandem skydive in the world. We got there early in the morning and watched a short video about how there's a really good chance we could get seriously injured or killed and they have absolutely no responsibility while signing and initialing a several page contract about 100 times. After suiting up in harnesses, and getting 5 minutes of training, we boarded the plane. We took off and started climbing into the sky. We seemed really high up when my instructed told me we were only at 5000ft and had a lot further to go. I wasn't all that scared or nervous since these guys jump several times per day and our instructors were really relaxed. As we gained altitude, we were given supplemental oxygen on the ride up because the 18,000ft jump is so high. Finally, when it was time to jump, we took off our oxygen masks, put on our goggles, opened up the door and basically fell off the side of the plane.

From 18,000ft you get about 90 seconds of freefall at over 120mph. The air is hitting you so hard, your skin feels like it's flying off your body and it can be a little hard to catch your breath. The only part that bothered me was my ears. The cold air was hitting my ears really hard and it was causing some pain and I actually feared that I was damaging my ears. I had a little pain for the rest of the day but it eventually went away. Maybe next time I'll look into ear protection. At around 5500ft, the parachute is pulled and you come to a very sudden stop and glide the rest of the way down. My instructor let me control the parachute for the ride down before taking over for the landing. We had a soft landing on our butts. Somehow I managed to get rocks in my underwear and also ripped my pants somewhere on the jump... maybe when the chute was pulled. Overall, I enjoyed it quite a bit. The ocean views were great and I think I'd do it again. It just happened all so fast and on your first trip you don't know what to expect so it goes by even faster. I think jumping a second time would be even more fun. I didn't pay for the video or pictures, but you can see some pics and vids of the jumps of FaceBook...

Jamie Morris : Depeche Mode @ The Hollywood Bowl (Night 2) : Dave Gahan & Martin Gore
Dave Gahan & Martin Gore
Depeche Mode @ The Hollywood Bowl (Night 2)

Tonight I went to the Hollywood Bowl to catch Depeche Mode in the 2nd of their two shows. There was some concern that one or both shows could be canceled due to Dave Gahan's health problems, but both shows went on. It was my first time seeing DM, however, I did see Martin Gore perform a solo show at The Mayan once. The show tonight was great. They played everything I could have asked for. Here's a copy of the setlist:

in chains
wrong
hole to feed
walking in my shoes
its no good
a question of time
precious
fly on the windscreeen
little soul
a question of lust
miles away/the truth is
policy of truth
in your room
i feel you
enjoy the silence
never let me down again
----------
shake the disease
stripped
behind the wheel
----------
personal jesus
waiting for the night

Also, there some good (and bad) video clips from the Bowl shows up on YouTube.

Jamie Morris : Black Francis / Salsa Dancing / Artwalk / Beach Party : Frank Black @ The Mint
Frank Black @ The Mint
Black Francis / Salsa Dancing / Artwalk / Beach Party

I've been busy hosting some visitors for the past couple of weeks. Yazming from Chicago stayed for a few days and then Melissa came back for her final 10 days in the USA before returning to France. And I also got to hang out with my dear friend Isabell who was visiting from Seattle. Last Friday, Melissa and I joined some CouchSurfers for Dance Downtown. Every couple of weeks in the summer they offer free dance lessons as well as live music and DJs outside at the Music Center. Tonight was salsa and merengue night. It was really crowded, but we made our way to the front with the beginners and got some basic lessons. On Wednesday, I went to see Pixies singer Frank Black play at a small bar called The Mint. It was my third time seeing him and the best. He did a bunch of Pixies songs as well as some songs from Teenager Of The Year, and it wasn't acoustic as advertised. And, I almost didn't get in. I bought the last ticket before it sold out. Here are some pics my friend Debi took at the show. On Thursday, I went to the monthly Downtown Artwalk with my friend Tihana who may be moving back to Croatia soon. (Why is everyone leaving me???) And this afternoon, I rode my Vespa up PCH for a little beach party at Sycamore Cove in Malibu. Nice place for a party and a nice day for scooter ride… especially the ride home during sunset.

Jamie Morris : Lake Tahoe Weekend : On the Boat with the Girls
On the Boat with the Girls
Lake Tahoe Weekend

This weekend I joined Tamar, Leo, Cindy, and Usha for a little road trip to Lake Tahoe. Well, not really a little road trip... it was about 500 miles each way - a long drive which was made interesting with a few road rage incidents (people seem to like throwing food and drinks at Leo). We spent two nights (for free!) at the Tahoe Seasons Resort where our rooms had jacuzzis in the middle of them. On Saturday, we rented a boat and had a little fun on the lake. That is until the thunder and hail ("It's HELL! It's HELL!") storm came and we couldn't find our way back to the marina. But we survived. On Sunday, we stopped at a casino and some (not me) lost all their money at the blackjack table. The ride home was not without a little excitement either. Tahoe was really nice, but I think 1000 miles in 48 hours is a little too long for me to be in a car.

Here are some photos from the weekend.
