Jamie Morris : Ovechkin vs Frolov, Portuguese Class, Gone To Mexico : My Portuguese Class
My Portuguese Class
Ovechkin vs Frolov, Portuguese Class, Gone To Mexico

The Washington Capitals finally came to town this week. I've been waiting 3 years to see Alexander Ovechkin play, but with the horrible NHL scheduling, we sometimes only get to see east-coast teams play once every few years. The game was really good and the score was within a goal for most of the game. The Kings took a 3-1 lead in the third period with a powerplay goal while Mr. Ovechkin himself sat in the penalty box. This turned out to be the game winning goal (Thanks Alex!). The Caps came back to make it 3-2, but that was all they could do. The Kings put in two empty-netters at the end. Final score: 5-2 on Russian Heritage Night at Staples Center.

Also this week, I saw a couple of movies that I would describe as just OK... The Changeling starring Angelina Jolie and Role Models. I wouldn't run out and see them if I were you, but they weren't horrible.

I also finished up my fall quarter beginning/intermediate level portuguese class this week. I guess I probably should have been studying spanish this month because I'm leaving tonight on red-eye to Mexico City. See ya next week!

Hosting Again...

This week I hosted an Essex girl named Nicola. She got to go on Jamie's VIP tour of Paramount Pictures which included a star sighting and a tour of the Dirty Sexy Money set. We also did some skating in Venice Beach while doing permanent damage to our lungs thanks to the wildfire smoke. And I also made sure she ate well... Musha, Real Food Daily, and Hama Sushi. She'll be back for one more day next week before continuing on her RTW trip.

Jamie Morris : Disneyland & California Adventure : Raquel, Jin, Mary and Jamie on Space Mountain
Raquel, Jin, Mary and Jamie on Space Mountain
Disneyland & California Adventure

I'm not even a fan of Disneyland, but it's become a yearly tradition thanks to my pal Mary who gets me in for free. This trip was a little different because there were four of us including one first-timer and also because of the fact that they sky was black, the sun was red, and it was snowing black and white ashes from a nearby wildfire. I left with itchy eyes, a dry nose, a sore throat, and whatever's left of my lungs, but I had fun.

Jamie Morris : Day of the Dead, Election Day, The Who : Roger Daltrey & Pete Townsend @ Nokia Theatre

Day of the Dead, Election Day, The Who

It's been an eventful month so far. I stayed in for Halloween because I don't really enjoy annoying drunk people. Halloween is certainly different than how I remember it as a kid. I did celebrate Dia de los Muertos on November 1st with some tamales (mole chicken & lemon cream) at the East LA Tamale Festival and then went to the Day of the Dead Festival at Hollywood Forever. On Election Day, I skipped my portuguese class to go home and watch the results even though I knew it would be a landslide. The next day was a little strange as everyone was so happy that the good guy won, but so sad that California passed Proposition 8. I've never been so proud of my country and so embarrassed by my state. This weekend I spent a little time at the new L.A. Live complex next to the Staples Center. On Saturday night, I saw The Who at the Nokia Theatre. It's a great venue, and it was amazing to see them play there. A really bad band who's name I won't even bother to look up opened up, but The Who were great and played many of their hits from the 60s and 70s. Here's a look at the setlist. On Sunday night, I went back to LA Live to see Beck play on opening night at Club Nokia, another great venue. Jenny Lewis opened up and sounded great. Beck, on the other hand, was terrible live. His sound wasn't good, and he looked as bored as the crowd for most of the show. I'm glad I got my ticket for half-price on craigslist. Monday and Tuesday were movie nights. On Monday, I went to what I thought was a screening of Green Street Hooligans 2 in Santa Monica, but it turns out it was the premiere which was kinda cool. The movie was a little disappointing. The original was a cool soccer hooligan story starring Elija Wood, but this sequel was basically a prison fight movie. And on Tuesday night, I saw a screening of Bill Maher's Religulous. I thought it was pretty funny, and I completely agree with him when it comes to religion, but I think a more serious documentary would have served a better purpose. Making fun of people isn't the best way to get people to change their way of thinking.
