Venezuela Trip Canceled

Today wasn't a good day. First, I woke up with a really sore foot. My foot was bothering me a little last week, but I think I walked on it too much last night and now it really hurts.

Also today, Dave and I made our decision to cancel our trip to Venezuela. Delujo Promociones, the company responisble for selling tickets to Copa America, has not delivered the soccer tickets to anyone who ordered them and they have been unreachable by phone and email. I can't believe that such an incompetent company was chosen for such a major event. On top of that, we're just three days from leaving and we haven't been able to find places to stay in some of the cities we are going to. And finally, on Friday, the US State Department issued a travel warning telling americans that it may not be safe to be in Venezuela during the Copa America because of violence and political demonstrations. We're both really disappointed, but everything was telling us not to go and I did not want to spend my entire vacation tracking down tickets and trying to find places to stay. Especially in a country where security is an issue.

Jamie Morris : DJ Shadow / Cut Chemist / Carlinhos Brown : On My Vespa
On My Vespa
DJ Shadow / Cut Chemist / Carlinhos Brown

After watching the US National Team win the 2007 Gold Cup by beating Mexico 2-1 this afternoon on TV, I went to the Hollywood Bowl for a KCRW World Music Concert. I missed the openers, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, while I was picnicing outside. When I arrived, Brazilian Carlinhos Brown was onstage. The headline act was DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist peforming The Hard Sell... a DJ set using only 45s. The music they are able to make using only turntables and 45s was quite cool, however, I think their choice of music left the crowd a bit disappointed. After the show, we went to after-party backstage which had much better music than the actual show.

Jen & Herman's Wedding Shower Luau Party

Today I hopped on my Vespa and rode over 30 miles to Pasadena on surface streets to Jen & Herman's Wedding Shower Luau Party. The ride was fun and I would have completely gotten lost if I didn't have my Garmin GPS. Unfortunately, I left it on during the party and the battery died, so I had to get home on my own. I got a little lost. The party was fun and included water balloons, exploding cakes, toilet paper dresses, and I finally got to meet Barklee. More pics and details on the official wedding blog.

Tonight I got together with some of my old coworkers for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. I didn't actually eat any cheesecake, but I did eat some yummy Littlejohn's English Toffee that I bought at Farmer's Market.

Boston & Maine

I took a 3-day mini-vacation this weekend. I boarded a redeye to Boston on Friday night and arrived at 6:00am Saturday. I spent the morning walking around with my uncle and cousin, had a chocolate chip cannoli at Mike's Pastry and bought some CDs at Newbury Comics. Then I met up with my parents and we headed down to Foxboro to watch the Gold Cup quarterfinals at Gillette Stadium - the Patriots new stadium. We saw two matches: Canada vs. Guatemala (3-0) and USA vs. Panama (2-1). Then we drove up to Maine where I spent Saturday at my parent's house and Sunday in Freeport and Portland before flying back to Los Angeles Monday night.

Cansei de Ser Sexy @ The Fonda

I've been waiting to see this show for quite awhile. CSS played a soldout show at the Henry Fonda Theatre tonight on the last night of their USA tour. If you haven't heard them, they're an indie dance rock band from Brazil. They get some airplay here in LA on Indie 103. They're probably my favorite new band from the past year. The show was late for a Sunday night. I skipped the opening bands (Bonde Do Role canceled due to some dental emergency) and CSS didn't hit the stage until 11:15pm. They played almost all of their songs and a few new ones that I'd never heard. The set included a cover of L7's "Pretend We're Dead" with Donita Sparks as a special guest. And they also did "I Wanna Be Your J-Lo" - their take on Sleater Kinney's Joey Ramone song. They concert was great. Lovefoxx was definitely having a lot of fun onstage and at the end said this was the best show they've ever played in the USA.

Jamie Morris : Gold Cup Begins : Eddie Johnson Scores For Team USA
Eddie Johnson Scores For Team USA
Gold Cup Begins

I attended a few soccer matches this past week. Last Saturday, I went to the Home Depot Center and saw the LA Galaxy play a rather boring match against DC United that ended 0-0. Then this week, the CONCACAF Gold Cup began. The Gold Cup in an international competition between the best teams in North America, Central America, and the Carribean. The US Mational Team played their first match on Thursday beating Guatemala 1-0 here at the HDC. I watched that match on TV, but today I attended their second match which was against Trinadad & Tobago as part of a doubleheader. The first match of the day was Guatemala vs. El Salvador and you could tell most of the fans were here for these teams, not team USA. Unfortunately, here in the US, the home team usually feels like the visiting team because our fans are usually outnumbered. I had a great seat in the front row of section 109, which luckily was in the shade for most of the afternoon. The USA vs. Trinadad & Tobago game was good. The USA coach gave most of the best players a rest today, but we did see a good game that the US won 2-0 with goals by Eddie Johnson and Brian Ching. The USA have one more match to play before moving on the quarterfinals. The next game is Tuesday in Foxoboro, Massachusetts against El Salvador. I'm hoping they do well and win their group so I'll see them next weekend in Foxboro where I'll be on Saturday before going up to Maine for a couple of days.
